DON McDERMOTT WANTED: A football coach at 1-A Beatty
Beatty needs a football coach for the 2010 season. Thus far, Brian Hayes, the athletics director at that Southern Nevada Class A League school, has had no luck getting any one to agree to coach the Hornets. The time element is getting critical. Official workouts begin Aug. 12; see the 2010 schedule on page B2. But there are some preseason deals to be completed, like finding out who's going to play and getting them the required physical examinations, as well as completing the required forms, as well as seeing to it that each student-athlete has health insurance and managing some financial requirements, including the payment of $35. Every athlete in every sport has to pay that fee to participate in 2010-2011, because the Nye County School District is trying to deal with a major budget deficit. Hayes has been an assistant coach for the Pahrump American Legion baseball team -- which includes Hornet Isais Flores -- this summer. On occasion, several Beatty athletes show up at Deutch Memorial Park to cheer on their teammate. With all of that in mind, it's time for someone in Beatty or the Amargosa Valley to step up and take charge of the football program. Beatty plans the eight-man game, so whoever coaches will be in charge of at least 20 to 25 players, as well as working with AD Hayes on arranging travel and a myriad of other details involved in putting a football team on the field. -- Because of logistical complications, the 14- and 16-and-under Pahrump girls' softball teams will not travel to post-season tournaments this summer, but the 10Us are at the California State Games, which start today in San Diego. The 10s open at 8 a.m. against Selma, Calif. Headed for San Diego are Remi Nicosia, Courtney Cochrell, Abbie White, Krista Toomer, Alyvia Briscoe, Leeanne Kaiwa, Adreanna Sandoval, Aaliyah Ruiz, Evandy Murphy, Megan Cotton, Jordan Egan, Skyler Hycz, Jackie Stobbe, Amaya Wright and Taylor Egan. The 16s are trying to arrange an end-of-the-season tournament at home; 2-1 in games played in Las Vegas last weekend, Pahrump is at Majestic Park Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. -- Pahrump Valley's Major Division Little League All-Star baseball team was 1-1 at the District 4 tournament in Las Vegas, heading into a game against Red Rock at Vistas Park Thursday. -- Watch for an announcement in the next few weeks about the planned development of a Junior Division American Legion baseball program. The team for 16-and-under players is tentatively scheduled to begin play in June 2011. |
