Arts & Crafts needs help

The Pahrump Fair & Festival Arts and Crafts Committee needs nonprofit organizations' advertising posters to use in decorating the Bob Ruud Community Center during the festival scheduled for September.

We are looking for either a two-sided display of up to 10 foot by 14 foot, with another 18 foot (or less) of hanging objects, or one-sided displays of up to a full poster size.

GBC Club Alfresco

Club Alfresco, an outdoors club focused on visiting and gaining more knowledge about Southern Nevada's unique ecology, has been approved by the student government of Great Basin College in Elko.

This gives Pahrump students a more well-rounded college experience.

NAH Bereavement Camp

Camp Mariposa, sponsored by Nathan Adelson, will be an overnight bereavement camp for children 7 to 12, who have lost a loved one, July 16-18, in Torino Canyon in Las Vegas.

Activities are designed to facilitate the natural grieving process balanced with arts and crafts, sports, music, storytelling and other activities.

VFW schedule

The VFW Post 10054 has the following events scheduled:

* Pancake breakfasts will be from 8 a.m. to noon, July 17, 31; Aug. 7, 21; and Sept. 4, 18. The cost is $3. Proceeds will go to landscape the front.

* Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 a.m., each Sunday. The cost varies from $3 to $8 and includes coffee and orange juice.

* Dinner is served from 5 to 7 p.m., each Friday. Dinners range from $6 to $8. The second Friday is fish and chips for $7.

Mt. Charleston orientation

Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold orientation for "new" parents from 9 to 10 a.m., Aug. 25, in the multi-purpose room.

There will be a tour of the school and a question and answer period.

Kindergarten students will be pre-assessed Aug. 30 through Sept. 1. Assessment ties will be assigned during registration.

Kindergarten begins Sept. 2.

Sheriff's Forum

Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo will hold an open forum for questions and answers from 1 to 3 p.m. July 11 and Aug. 22, at Wulfy's Sports Lounge.

PVUMC book sale

Pahrump Valley United Methodist Church will hold a book sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., July 17 at the church, 1300 E. Highway 372.

Books include hard covers paperbacks, children's books, pocket editions and others.

PVHS registration

Pahrump Valley High School will begin enrollment from 7 to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Aug. 16.

Enrollment is only necessary for students not previously enrolled at Rosemary Clarke Middle School or PVHS at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

Enrollment packets will be available from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday in front of the guidance office.

To expedite enrollment, bring a copy of the student's birth certificate, immunization records, parent or guardian photo ID, notarized guardianship documents (if applicable), two proofs of residency (mortgage cover page, utility bill, lease agreement, bank statement, etc.) and transcript /last report card from the previous school.

Mt. Charleston registration

Mt. Charleston Elementary will be registering students for the 2010-11 school year from 8 to 11 a.m., Aug. 16.

New student registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Aug. 25.

Bring proof of residency, original birth certificate, original immunization record (Hepatitis A and B are required by the state) and a Social Security card for photocopying.

A class list with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m., Aug. 27.

Grades one through five will start school Aug. 30.

Supply lists for grades K-5 will be available starting in August at local businesses.

Back-to-School Health Fair

There will be a Back-to-School Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 31, at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

There will be dental screenings, sealants and varnish, free immunization (bring records) sports physicals for $10, nutrition information, car seat safety checks, medical and physical screenings fingerprinting, social services information, gun-lock safety and safety demonstrations by Fire-Rescue and the sheriff's office.

SHIP volunteers

Medicare volunteers are needed to join other SHIP volunteers in helping senior beneficiaries by providing unbiased information to help make informed decisions and give information about programs to provide extra help. Free training will be provided.

Hafen registration

Hafen Elementary will hold registration for new students from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Aug. 9.

Parents are asked to bring the following: birth certificate, up-to-date shot records, verification of address (utility bill, mortgage or rent receipt), parent or guardian photo ID and any custody papers, if applicable.

The first day of school will be Aug. 30 for grades 1-5.

Kindergarteners will be assessed Aug. 30 through Sept. 1, and be assigned a time when they register. Kindergarten will start Sept. 2.

New student and parent orientation will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 19.

Open house will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 2.

New Hope registration

New Hope Christian Academy is holding open enrollment for grades K-12 for the 2010-1011 school year.

Burn Moratorium

Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service has placed a moratorium on burning, effective June 1, due to restrictions placed by BLM and the Department of Forestry. No new burn permits will be issued and existing permits will not be honored until late fall.

Friends of PV Hospice

Volunteers needed

Nevada Senior Medicare Patrol, located in the Nevada Attorney General's office in Las Vegas, is looking for volunteers for its program.

The primary function is to educate Nevadans about not becoming a victim of Medicare and health fraud, and how to recognize Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste, errors or abuse.

SCORE, counselors to America's small businesses, is ready to help start individual businesses and help businesses with problems including financial problems and being behind on payments.

Check to see if you qualify for an interest-free government loan as provided by the America's Recovery Capital Program.

Women's self-defense class

Homeland Heroes and Nye County sheriff's Office will offer a two-day women's self-defense class from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., July 17 and 18, at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

'Tea of Many Nations'

Church of the Harvest will host a "Tea of Many Nations" from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Bob Ruud Community Center.

The event is the kick-off for the church's non-profit "Operation Christmas Child."

The organization fills shoe boxes for children all over the world for delivery at Christmas.

The tea is free, however, a donation of a small item to fit in a shoe box is requested.

Items such as crayons, socks, pencils, etc. will fit.

The church is seeking donations of items before the tea to use in raffles and an auction to raise additional funds.

There will be a fashion show as well.

'Duckie Dunk' tickets

The Arts & Crafts Committee will be selling Duckie Dunk tickets for a chance to win up to $500 at the following locations:

Fridays and Saturdays at the indoor swap meet at the Skate Zone;

Tickets are also available at Shadow Mountain Feed, Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce and the UNCE office.

The drawing will be Sept. 26. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

Beatty Library project

The Beatty Library has received notification of possible funding through the Pepsi Refresh Project.

Nye County Animal Shelter vouchers

Nye County Animal Shelter will offer low-cost spay or neuter vouchers at $50 for cats and $75 for dogs at the shelter, 171 N. Kitty Hawk Drive.

The fee includes surgery, rabies shot, and in the case of a dog 1 year old, Nye County license.

The program is designed to assist low-income households to sterilize its pets. No one will be turned away.

Amateur Radio licensing exams

Examinations for Amateur Radio licenses will be at noon, July 10, at the Nye County Office of Emergency Management, 1510 Siri Lane.

Republican Women scholarships

Pahrump Valley Republican Women is offering $2,000 in total scholarship funds to be awarded to graduating high school seniors.

Students from public, private or home-schooling are welcome to apply.

A high school GPA of 3.0 is required and short essay on "Why Voting is Important and How Can the Primary Election Affect the Choices in the General Election" together with a completed application must be received by PVRW no later than Aug. 3.

A three-member committee may interview participants at a later date to hear educational long-term goals.
