PUC approves rate hike
The Public Utilities Commission recommended approving many of the requests in the Utilities Inc. rate increase, but scolded the company for double billing some expenses for reimbursement in a draft order issued last Friday.

Tax rates nearly unchanged
Government entities held the line on tax increases this year, making the 2010-11 fiscal year property tax rates for the year beginning July 1 almost identical to the 2009-10 fiscal year that ended June 30.

TONOPAH -- Placing two local ballot questions on the Nov. 2 ballot -- authorizing an $8 per-parcel fee for the Nye County Water District and a 3-cent-per-gallon gas tax hike requested by the Regional Transportation Commission -- was postponed by Nye County commissioners Tuesday.

BLM meets with commissioners
TONOPAH -- The interim manager of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management Pahrump field office, Gayle Marrs-Smith, received approval from Nye County commissioners Tuesday for the transfer of reserved federal mineral lands and public lands at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge from the BLM to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
