The Great Basin College, Pahrump, campus honored its first graduating class with a dinner Wednesday, May 14.

The local event was sponsored by GBC Student Government and organized by Student Sen. Lora Berkabile.

There were smiles all around from graduates and their families, as well as GBC faculty and staff as they celebrated another Pahrump first.

Obviously proud and pleased, Pahrump campus Director Bill Verbeck introduced and congratulated each of the graduates present. Professor Gregory Schmaltz pointed out that, as the first graduating class, their pictures would still be on the wall 100 years from now.

Nine Pahrump students have successfully completed various degrees.

Associate of arts recipients are: Violet McKay-Simmons, Brenda Messervey-Bala, Linnea Siniaho and Trisa Tabrizie.

Vickie Castro and Leann Nauenburg received their associate of general studies degrees. Adam Billman, Russell Jamison and Keith Szelagowski earned their associate of applied science degrees.

Most of the graduating class plans to continue their education with bachelor's degrees through GBC. Their goals include becoming teachers, environmental resource managers and radiologists, to name a few.

The graduation ceremony was held in Elko's Great Basin College campus Saturday, May 17, and several Pahrump graduates were present in cap and gown to receive their degrees. Professors Dale Griffith and Schmaltz were present to honor the attendees and represent the Pahrump campus.

They invite those interested in becoming future graduates to contact GBC at 775-727-2000.
